Backlash Against NY TIMES Music Critics

And that’s a good thing!!

Both Rick Beato and Ted Gioia have responded with a full court press rebuttle.

Highlighting how these pompous, IVY League as@h$les, made absolute fools of themselves.

Not one of them has any background in music. They aren’t qualified to even work in a record shop if any such thing even existed.

It’s worth reading Ted’s responses and Rick’s responses to the New York Times.

We don’t want these type of people in charge of deciding what is good art or not and cancelling artists.

I do believe one thing needs to be said that neither Ted or Rick highlighted. Maybe they know and weren’t willing to say it or it’s just obvious?

These are some Woke/leftists idiots who essentially called all white song writers basically drug/boozers with a guitar in their hands. Not only does Jay-Z not to deserve to be on a list with Paul Simon and Billy Joel, he likely does not deserve to be called a musician at all.

Ted’s response to the list by making his own list is behind a pay wall so I can’t share it.

But he made a public response to Rick’s video.

Rick Beato Versus the NY Times - by Ted Gioia

Your opinion on a piece of art must be informed. Understand something about structure. Harmony, rhythm and melody. And wouldn’t be a bad idea to have had some lessons in actually playing an instrument before you become a professional music critic.

These are the same minds that brought you borderless countries and Marxist Economics.

They are delusional individuals. If I ran a newspaper, I wouldn’t hire these people to be paper boys.

… BINGO! on the observation. Not only do you have to “replace” White people you must also remove the existence of White art, music, literature. Everyone should know that anything coming out of the NYT particularly on Art, History, Music is always nothing but thinly veiled Social Engineering of one kind or another. Not just to single out the NYT on this charge it has been and it is still true of many other MSM publications as well (e.g. Time Magazine).

The NYT will be what is has always been. Don’t worry, I’m sure that Gioia’s response is not worth reading anyway.

My bad. I should have introduced Ted. Ted is one of the good guys. They invited him to participate but he gave them the finger. He is the definition of non-establishment. He writes on how AI is destroying artists, the idiocrasy of MSM press. He’s kind of the go to observer of what is happening in music, art and culture the corruption of Hollywood and Music Industry. Rick has interviewed Ted twice on where music is headed.

… at least there’s one good guy out there.

Stopped reading NYT articles on just about any/ every thing they print.
Their music section has been a bleek chapter for a long time, and I see theyre starting to fade fast on the literature as well.
this list was hard to read for many reasons; one being what Rick Beato points out as well; that even though you dont need degrees in music to make it or write about it, it would be nice to have some/any credibility to point to other than “NYT writer”.

The 30 greatest American songwriters is also a dying theme I think, as songwriting has changed a lot the past decades, going from a one man /one band cred thing to a plethora of people all getting creds for their input now.
You rarely see song credits from one person anymore.
Since everyone is working on multiple projects now it seems, you have to give people their creds, or theyll just stop working with you, and people as a currency has come up in value.

I mention this, because naming the 30 “best” ones ( Music is not a competition) is am increasingly more difficult task because of this.
So when I see them name “Bad Bunny” as one the 30 best song writers in America, I just have a hard time taking you serious.
First of all he´s Puerto Rican. Secondly; I doubt these NYT writers knows what he contributes to the writing creds.
Sadly NYT is good for nothing but whitewash genocide and war crimes these days.

Unfortunately, the dying NY Times still has 100 million registered subscribers.

And even more unfortunate, the woke IVY league schools still receive approximately $4.6–6.4 billion in federal funding.

My name for the NYT is…

I read through that article. What a bunch of trash mixed in with the usual nods to the ‘greats’

Taylor Swift doesn’t write her own music

Jay Z is a criminal that glorifies criminality.

And really, Greatest Living Songwriter ‘Lil Thug’ ? aaaahhaa

Absolutely. On the other hand, Beato is such a good educator. I have several of his music theory and guitar courses, and you can REALLY learn from this guy. His breakdown of songs is fantastic and very educative, and his interviews are wonderful - Gilmour springs to mind. If someone on YouTube deserves the huge amount of followers, he’s definitely one of them.

Beato is great for sure.
As a drummer I am very thankful that he got Jimmy Chamberlin of the Smashing Pumpkins, who was my inspiration to start drumming 30 years ago, to sit down and talk for almost 2 hours or more.
I saved it to disc

Beato is one of the guys that seems humble and honest about the industry.
His kids has perfect pitch, as many kids of musicians but they also hear instantly if something is AI produced, and thats a little harder.
Most likely age is factor but still impressive.
The way he breaks down theory is great, no ego involved, so he I agree with that statement

Their following is a result of their bandit business model😂

I took them up on a one year offer for 20$.
I knew I wouldnt read the news much, but thought it was worth it for the books and Athletic.
When I tried to unsubscribe 3 weeks before the end I was told I had to end it more than a month before end, so I now would have to renew the subscrition and they would refund me as soon as that was done.
They havent refunded or answered a mail since. :joy:
I talk crap on them every chance I get-thanks for the invite:+1::hugs:

Good to see lots of people familiar with Rick. I too started watching him early on when he was featuring his son and his perfect pitch and I purchased his Beato book too.

If you’re at all into music and culture and want to keep up of where it’s all going, Ted is the man too. You don’t need the stinkin’ New York Times Arts section with guys like Rick and Ted providing great journalism.

Rick interviewed Ted twice and I was sold. Alot of prominent artists on that substack as well as the establishment probably watching him.

Ted has an innate sense of social cycles and talks alot about AI and the arts and the coming blow back from the populace. How the destruction of Hollywood and the corrupt, mafia owned? music industry is creating the possibility of a renaissance away from the corporate owners with everything from Hollywood producers opening up their own movie theaters.

It’s not all bad news.

The New Counterculture - by Jared Henderson

Ted even started his own one year course in the humanities for adults who were unfamiliar with the great Greek philosophers and other must reads to be a literate adult.

And if you’re at all into jazz, Ted did a piece that I wrote about my encounter with Jaco Pastorius, most agree the most innovative and important electric bass player to have walked the earth who was killed shortly after my encounter with him.

This chap didn’t end up at all well either.

Is this considered Jazz or Blues… don’t really know. Probably need a course to know the difference.

One of the great jazz trumpet players of all time. West Coast Jazz movement. Chet, Art Pepper, Stan Getz.

He was a young handsome talent with that James Dean look and he liked to shag women.

Not a conservatory type. Probably had perfect pitch, could hear everything, and Charlie Parker noticed, gave him a start.

His album “She Was Too Good for Me” probably memorized by every Trumpet player that ever picked up the instrument with an All Star Line up.

Yup, he was a drug addict. Lost all his teeth and had to relearn how to play sans teeth.

Died under mysterious circumstances in Amsterdam. I think we know more about JFK assassination then we do how Chet fell out a window in a hotel.
