Hmm…what if A.I. is not an object at all?
But “Subject” to something far more …inteligent, powerfull…etc
… the first question one asks about any “non-determined” object is: What the hell is that?
… for some reason it seems as if with AI it has been already determined for us in advance as to what kind of object it is. The two categories I mentioned above are the only two types of objects that we know of as Ontologically available for observation. If there is a third Ontological category of objects available I have yet to see it presented. … but of course I could be wrong.
You see…slaves to what we call ontology.
Instead one can ask …for example…why is it, instead of …what is it.
But such a mental leap requires audacity and courage at least on a mental level…
You see…"why is AI "instead,what is …
Yes,there is.The third one is WHY is it…anything that it is?
… there is an order to asking questions of an object. First determine the type of object, then one may ask other questions.
A computer is capable of understanding dyadic processes, doing what it’s programmed to do yet will never be able to understand the meaning of the computer language used to program it.
… BINGO! AI, as is any computer, dyadic … granted it can process lots of dyads very quickly but there is no number, quantum or otherwise, and no speed at which the “processor” will serendipitously achieve sentience. Implicitly or explicitly this is part of the AI fairy tale that is being sold.
Percy gave credit to Peirce for that one in this lecture.
The Fateful Rift: The San Andreas Fault in the Modern Mind," Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities, 3 May 1989.
… the video of that lecture can be seen on C-span.
https://www.c-span.org/program/public-affairs-event/the-san-andreas-fault-in-the-modern-mind/159052
… In A Thief of Peirce you will find an unedited and an edited version of that speech.
Regardless of the lack of potential to achieve sentience or the possibility of AI itself being a boondoggle/grift…the build-out of its infrastructure, in most cases with land/resources acquired under the shadiest of circumstances (farmland, water, subsidized power) and most certainly against the will of the majority, will have untold deleterious effects on a society already on life support…
And if the promise is that it would possibly cure cancer, etc, then I’d take the cancer please…
Here’s an interesting, sober discussion that might be shared with the uninitiated:
“AI Expert: We Have 2 Years Before Everything Changes! We Need To Start Protesting! - Tristan Harris” - Diary of a CEO
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFU1OCkhBwo&t=2080s
If you can’t spare the time to listen in its entirety (I usually try to multitask to justify the time, (which is shorter than most might realize) Here is one interesting timestamp:
From 105 min to 111 Tristan argues (among other things) that it may be our last chance to use political power to have ANY effect on the outcome. He makes a comparison to the overall effect that NAFTA had on our economies and suggests that the damage would be MUCH greater. Interestingly, during his comparison to the North American Free Trade Agreement, Youtube threw up a window which partially obstructed the view of the video and which more-or-less praised the implementation of NAFTA.
A few of the comments from below the video that I appreciated overall:
“I can’t help but feel like timing is one of the biggest factors here. AI is arriving in late-stage capitalism… not a world where people have the bandwidth to think long-term . Most of us are just trying to survive. We’re exhausted. We’re working more than ever for less stability, and our nervous systems are fried. Everyone I speak to gets the existential implications of AI, but no one has the capacity to actually do anything about it. Burnout has become the default setting.
It’s as if all of these forces - economic precarity, political instability, technological acceleration, and collective burnout - are converging at the worst possible moment. The collision feels almost too perfectly timed.”
—“We lose intergenerational knowledge transmission that creates a societal weakening in the social fabric”.
Cool. He sounds like the typical southern eccentric.
I lived in Pass Christian Mississippi for a couple of years in the late 1990’s and befriended a few southerns who explained just how things were and still are in the southern culture. I am still friends with one of who lived down the road from me. Her family is Creole from New Orleans. Her mother and father moved to New York, then returned to Bay Saint Louis MS to retire. When I read Percy’s novel, The Movie Goer, many of the places were familiar and as were the characters.
Yes, according to that method.
But…there is another way or method.
Instead of first determining the type of object…
Determining why it is…here, there in the first place, where it is,for example.
… some methods are better than others and you are of course free to choose your method. I would caution that one’s choice of method comes with a caveat. That caveat is that once one has chosen one’s method Free Will ends.
Ah, the irony of D$ck Cheney’s wife as chairman of Humanities with his war mongering and hundreds of thousands dead.
… I know … right?

… Given that you have experienced the Post-Christian South you might also enjoy reading Flannery O’Connor.
… “I think it is safe to say that while the South is hardly Christ-centered, it is most certainly Christ-haunted.”
… You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you odd."
both from Flannery O’Connor
The REAL dicey part of that statement is the fact that until just recently (maybe as late as today, Dec.1st) most if not all governments WERE corporations. I remember years ago when you were concerned about the possibility that we citizens could be described as corporations… and you NAILED IT. Until now, we (citizens, by definition) WERE considered as Corpses/aka corporations. This is why you have to have a British agent represent you in a maritime court (also gone as of today - they are banks and not ISO20022 compliant) because you are considered a corporate entity, aka DEAD. Corporal. Corpse. You were unable to defend yourself because you simply are not alive in their court.
So while I agree we have EVERTHING to fear from computer programs based upon public opinion data, noise, we have already been so duped by the system that just maybe this AI manure is a primal wake up call to anyone who thinks he/she is living.
“And if you choose not to decide…you still have made a choice!”
And the truth will set you free…It will tick you off first, but then it will set you free.
Couldn’t help myself
…or It will either destroy you, cripple you, disable you, make you sick, break you, or simply kill you…In any case, it will change you into “something else”.
