I’m not sure how this works, may depend on email provider.
I got a recent scam message like this as text message from different number than contact, pretending to be someone I know asking for gift cards. At first they just asked for “a favor,” I replied “what is it,” before was sure was scammer or legitimate contact.
Reported the sender as scammer and got call back from local cop says there isn’t much they can do about that. If an account has been hacked first step would think is report to account administrator/tech support. That can be limited with a free e-mail system would guess.
