The old rebuff, “Go pound dirt”, or in this case, sand, has a stellar place in history, originating millennia ago. I hope all will view the video of the Mosab Yousef interview by Fox News a couple of posts above this one. Beginning at mark 6:05, Yousef says the location of Hamas leaders is 30 meters (more than 90 ft.) below the hospital, IN THE SAND and comments about the resilience of sand. One would have to assume that Hamas would know at what depth they would have to tunnel to escape a bombardment, at least for a while. Immediately upon that comment, I thought of a film that illustrated this very well.
I think it was Josephus who wrote that the leader of the rebels at Masada, a nephew of Jesus, used the tactic you will see depicted in the film clip below. I don’t know how well bunker busters really work but IDF could have a heck of a time penetrating to the depth Yousef stated, I just don’t know. Meanwhile, the death rate above could be enormous! Watch Yousef’s interview when you get a chance.
Here’s an example of pounding sand. This clip was rather difficult to find. Minutes 8:00 to 10:20.
