My aunt was one of those who lived her whole life (lived to be 80) either in an institution setting or a group home setting in Wyoming. She was left severely disabled as a child, both mentally and physically, due to trauma suffered from a tornado storm in Arkansas.
Her handicaps included the inability to vocalize words to express her wants and needs plus mobility issues. She still maintained a sweet disposition and a ready smile that won over others to readily assist her in meeting her needs. I agreed to act as her guardian for the
last twenty years of her life. It was a rewarding experience that exposed me to humans with special needs and those with the patience and will to assist them. Being a care giver is no easy task and never pays enough. It requires a special unique outlook on life
to take on the responsibility in a professional loving way. Those folks are in short supply, but I met some through my aunt.
This helped me greatly to escape the clutches of psychiatry.

There are many theories on how Schizophrenia comes about.
Everything from cat viruses during pregnancy, to drugs, to genetics, to an “incident” that triggers it, to a combination of factors. There is even an interdimensional aspect that is rarely even discussed.
For me, the jury is still out.

One area that I delve into is perception control.
I try and focus on seeing and/or reading symbolism; into an unfolding communication, with the universe as a whole; geared spiritually, specifically to the living spirit in us all.
There are many perception paths; the good, the bad, and the ugly.
But yes, there are vast metaphysical worlds to explore!
AND, there are realms; where one dare not tread.
I’ve been there.
AND damn lucky, to have come back; still somewhat sane.
Metaphysics, kinda like cable TV, many channels, but only one brain and one screen.
… well, and you have to have some theory of mind (science of mind) to play in that field.
AND, therein lies a basic question, and/or rub:
Do you truly have; a mind of your own?
That is where childhood brainwashing comes in!!! 
Personally, I did not start using my own brain until age 70!! Experiences of my life pushed me into starting to question everything!! If we are not “thinking for ourselves”, do we even have a mind?!
