A better detection method is needed, but is that all 'they' are looking for? "Both Brown and Fitzsimmons say that at any one time there is a 10-metre asteroid somewhere between Earth and the moon."

so if an asteroid less than extinction level event were to strike a part of the earth, what region would be our preference? Uninhabited, or a specific geographic (governmental) region? The old Jerry Clower comedian line about possum (accidentally wildcat) hunters ‘just shoot up amongst us, one of us has to have some relief’ line comes to mind. Uninhabited, or a region the source of constant social issues/conflict would be a better target? Can we steer them (asteroids)? Can we deflect them? What a God-like power that would be to choose a point of imact.
