Thanks. I’m reading Gloria Swanson’s autobiography published a few years before death. The opening chapter describes after this movie was opened at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre proving her value as a million dollar money making movie star, her popularity was reinforced by a humongous public relations campaign. Upon return from Europe a few years later she confesses to the reader after the huge reception put on for her return, to the hypocrisy of the adulation shown her of having a secret abortion at two months, two months ago in France to avoid bad publicity of being pregnant prior to her second marriage and protection of her career in the morals clause in her contract. She laments that a baby choose her and her husband as parents, and she killed it. Then she goes on to wonder how many in the crowd had dark shameful secrets too. I was a bit shocked at her insight and confession after reading that paragraph. She was 26 and at the high point in her career and realized the unsustainable circumstances of fame and fortune.
