Since having a contented population that has everything they need and want in order to ward off a revolution is impossible, the alternative is control of their thoughts and actions. Slaves and masters have always had a contentious and precarious relationship. Convincing slaves they are not slaves is a lucrative business and a stimulating field of study for “brain scientists”.
