A cautionary tale of iPhone passcodes

Backup Adventures with an iPhone

48 hours ago I had the fantastic idea of changing my passcode on my iPhone, why not I thought, its been a while and nothing has gone wrong so lets see if we can mix things up a little.

So there I was, sipping a coffee wondering what I would do with the rest of my evening…

Rebooted great, enter passcode….

Sorry incorrect, ah ok I thought, I must have not clicked confirm so I will use my old passcode.

Nope, no dice. The inevitable second and third and fourth and fifth attempts followed.

Please wait, your phone is unavailable for the next 10 mins, 30, mins, 3hrs, etc….

You get the picture, I went from lets see if we can harden our security with a few simple clicks to complete loss of access to my whole digital world.

No probs, I will just crack out the backup and let it do its magic!

Ah here it is, an old SATA drive I had lying around because I didn’t want to pay 10 times the going rate for Apple storage (I am not a millionaire obviously)

Let’s get that old fella plugged in and off we go….

What’s this, I need to activate my phone before I can restore it, ok lets do that, Oh no you need to completely erase the phone before you can do that as its locked.

Let’s do that, so here we go, erase the entirety of my last 10 years and hope it all works out thanks to those super duper ‘engineers’ at the big A.

Your phone is activated, now scan your face please, and now with a mask on (medical not halloween)

Great here we go, Ah the joys of modern tech!

Your backup is corrupted, restore cannot continue……

24 hours later into the disaster recovery I have still not been to bed, I found an old 7zip archive which was what we used to call in the trade ‘belt and braces’ which I am attempting to shovel into my old cadaver of an iPhone as I type.

The moral of this boring tale is

If it takes 10 seconds to decide to change your security passcodes, and 48 hours to recover from it not working who will try?

And yes I definitely didn’t get the passcode wrong when entering, it asks twice and I was very slow and methodical in my keystrokes.

Be careful folks, it’s only once the damn thing is dead on the operating table you realise how much its got its tentacles into your day to day.

Where is that old bakelite again…

That’s unfortunate no good.

This thing can tell what you look like under a covid face nappy but it can’t help you past stuck passcode? Hmm…

Landline phones are better.

True!

Or in my case a 48hr wait :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Excellent thread, and you accurately portray (apologies to any Apple aficionados reading this) all the gyrations and hoop jumping and contortions and obtuse technical thinking that comprise the devices and OS’s of the Apple ecosystem.

Being a parent of children that were most likely peer pressured by their many friends into becoming Apple Acolytes, I can attest to the frustration of navigating the “security” features of Apple, including the glitchy transmission of text codes in a round robin ordeal throughout your phones and laptops and email addresses to gain access to a locked device.

It’s not that I enjoy Android…it just that…I find it sucks less than iOS and at least permits one the dignity of choosing the OEM for the phone price gouging scheme; perhaps just a scintilla of choice, or the illusory mirage of technical mastery :joy:

In any case, hope your iPhone troubles are behind you, and good on you for at least striving to harden the security shell in your personal data domain.
