... and lest we forget the Fitbit debacle

Clif High covered this in the four part Antarctic mp3 Forum Borealis interviews a while back. A good story.

But a drop in the ocean of data-mining devices with which we’ve slowly been swamped… You build an Internet of Bodies one small step, one little device, at a time. It’s gradual cognitive-behavioral conditioning. At least I think that’s the term. Hang on… “Hey Al3xa, what’s cognitive-behavioral conditioning?”

A few years ago, 2016 I think, I had just moved back to Australia and was getting my bearings in the place. I was on a walk in a national park that happened to abut a federal airforce base. Kind of a secret location, but well known to the locals, which houses a helicopter battalion and some “special” brigade. Nice location for them I guess.

Wandering through the forest, I found a young kid wheeling his bicycle and being pretty keen on his phone. I sort of surprised him from over his shoulder when I bent down to take a look see what he was up to. He was on the hunt for Pokemon, and he nearly jumped out of his trousers when I said “Gotta catch em all, eh?”.

First thing I thought of was the FitBit thing and I’m convinced the Pokemon craze was the same type of operation, but better.

Stupid question - does the data on these devices only go one way??
