Archaeologists have made an intriguing revelation regarding these ancient containers, dating back 900 years, which have been uncovered in the Middle East over the course of several decades. It turns out that these “jars” were, in fact, employed as hand grenades during the Crusades.

Although the precise composition of these rudimentary grenades remains a historical enigma, experts speculate that they may have included unusual components such as dolphin fat and urine.

Simultaneously, any references to these grenades in medieval texts are veiled in secrecy. As one researcher involved in this recent study commented, “These were secret weapons and they didn’t necessarily want to tell everyone exactly how to make them.”
