I had a conversation about that with an Indian colleague a while ago. I said I thought Bharat sounded good, because it harkened back to ancient history. The Mahabharata literally means ‘the great story of India’. She said the name Hindustan was more popular, though, which seems very MAGA to me. Anyway, looks like she was wrong!
It’s actually in the constitution first line:
- Name and territory of the Union.—(1) India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States
She may be right or not about the popularity of Hindustan but it’s not in the constitution.
Yes, I’m aware about the Mahabharata, pretty obvious, lol. Bharat was the name of an ancient ruler it seems.
Everything’s obvious when you know it, eh?
Maybe it coulld still be used as a salutation, but I don’t think the dust has settled on this issue yet. However it will be a VERY expensive exercise to carry out in full and many people will become VERY rich on this.
Yeah - they spent millions just re-branding the Scottish Government. Scale that up by a couple of hundred and apply it to a the whole nation…
