My off-the-cuff guess: This is Russia responding to the freezing of Russian citizens’ assets by Western countries and a way to get real or suspected foreign agents (businesses often being convenient cover for foreign espionage) out of its country. And if the state or the government’s buddies make a profit in the process, all the better.

Nationalizing is a thin high wire to walk and maintain one’s balance on. Protect jobs? That’s an easy statement to make. Time will tell. I hope its not too late by then, as life so often is.
