I remember when the movie ‘Pleasantville’ was released into theaters in 1998 and heard about it, but never watched it. Stumbled upon this video explaining the symbolism and story line…interesting.
The thing about this narration is that I would change what he calls Baby Boomers’ culture war and replace Boomer with - Entertainment Industry. They’re the ones who mocked & ridiculed older values and as Neil Postman observed in Amusing Ourselves to Death, defined the dad of the nuclear family as a dumb, boring, useless old guy who was a loser, who should be laughed at. (Until I read his book, I really wouldn’t have observed this, but couldn’t fail to notice it in every sitcom afterwards.)
Yes, the entertainment industry has been the primary propaganda tool since radio receivers were made available everywhere on Earth to capture the radio waves permeating the medium. Television, movies and now the Internet were added to the tool kit. Amazing what can be done broadcasting ideas.
