Brits 'hoarding cash' amid uncertainty

Brits are hoarding ‘physical cash’…

As is often true, the ordinary people have more sense than their leaders.

I always keep cash just in case of power outages in the future. All our stores in my area still accept cash. I’m in the U.K. and things are dire here.

I keep hearing that from various sources. I wish a few of my fellow Americans knew more about it, because it might serve as cautionary. So far, where I live, people still “party like it’s 1928.” I did shock one retired nurse by telling her about Starmer’s cuts for fuel subsidies (sorry if I get the story garbled - I just knew people were worried about low income elderly) - she got very quiet & stared at me.

Sorry for the troubles. I even heard in Europe this spring, people were told to get iodine tablets “just in case of war.” Crazy times.

A lot of the post planscamdemic scaremongering has clearly not worked. When I visit supermarkets (grocery stores) in UK I see quite a few people prepared to queue for the cash self service machines. The British love a queue by the way

My experience is other than big retail chains like the supermarkets it is mainly trendy coffee shops who are operating a no cash policy.

Other retailers seem to be happy to welcome with open arms anyone with legal tender.

Here is Jeremy Corbyns brother Piers giving Aldi a piece of his mind and asserting his RIGHT to pay with legal tender for his strawberries.

Gawd bless you Piers and up yours Aldi :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

This may be old news nowadays, but even in a Britain with Sir K (as in Kafka) at the helm, every cloud is capable of having a silver lining. Not only is the increased use of cash good news in itself, but those of us who are opposed to the techno-fascism of mandatory digital ID are urging our fellow countrymen and countrywomen to do more of it.

Better to hoard storable food or silver or something real, needed and tradeable. Have a feeling there is hyperinflation coming quickly down the tracks now. China and Russia are reversing the sections and putting massive pressure on key financial institutions. Winning a war without use of military force on the West.

That’s nice but a lot of people are not wanting to spend the effort and time to fight the system and would rather just pull a card out.
I am sad to say that a lot of people with stronger principles are dying more and more, and the younger generation will just do whatever they are told because it’s convenient.

… fiat currency as it is not very digestible. But wait, maybe we have stumbled upon a new “green” idea — edible fiat currency.

Cash debit cards will soon morph into a digital wallet and then 3 million (petition against digital id, just shy) would seem to disagree

I am not okay with digital wallets. I dont mind credit cards but thats cuz i know its just a piece of plastic and nothing tied to my biometrics. I try to use cash for anything less than $50 too, as I prefer it and not being tracked.

Same, I try and use cash everywhere but its getting harder with supermarkets making people queue for one cash till out of 50.

In the USA almost all of the self checkouts accept cash, its a little insert like at the old change machines for quarters. But (shocker) if you go to a Whole Foods its cards only, they are owned by Amazon now.
So there is the push.
But you can pay in cash at ‘normal’ supermarkets. The ‘farmer’s market’ supermarket is a chain and nothing to do with real farmers independently vending, but they dont even have self checkouts, its all real cashier’s, which is good. Sometimes annoying 'I AM NOT DOING ANYTHING FUN THIS WEEKEND STOP ASKING" But yes job security and human contact.

We need a phrase for reverse anthromorphism.

Instead of putting human traits to an intimate object , we are putting a human face Jeff bezos , Amazon, whole foods, on an government creation (darpa). This government creation is only accepting digital currency .

In the little village I live the supermarket had to put back in a cash register to the amount of two insted of one. All herding to the self payment didn’t work. Cash is still very much used but by elderly mostly. You do see more and more middle aged coming around and using cash. Aldi are cash registers and nothing more. Did not know Aldi had full digital shops!

After simple repair at a local, 40-yr old car shop, the mechanic informed me there would be a small charge for using cash; you know, like it used to be with credit purchases. His response to my (incredulous) inquiry was, “Our bank charges us when we turn in cash.”

There seems to be other “institutional pressures” to force the elimination of cash.

As if that digital thingie is free of charge by same banks. They should weigh what is more expensive, the monthly use of that thingie versus bringing in cash. On the other hand were I live it is mandatory to have digital thingy as an option. When it wasn’t there were shops that was cash only due to the hefty price of that digital thingie. But yep, they use brute force to get their way!

That’s actually opposite from my mechanic.
I had meant to ask him before showing up, but he gives you a 3 percent discount if you pay in cash.
So for my large bill of over $1k I could have saved $60. grrrrr next time.
