Unfortunately, universities UK red brick and other varieties, are in a race to the bottom, due to lack of funding. There has been massive recruitment campaigns into countries where for example, simple referencing is not taught or required. There is acceptance of students into post grad programmes who would not pass IELTs English proficiency tests, who don’t attend lectures or tutorials, and in my view some who seem to be using the student visas to actually enter a country and a university for the purposes of employment, rather than study, . The result is a huge additional workload and emotional labour requirement for academic staff who were not appointed to perform these additional duties - double whammy on the quality of teaching and supervision of academic work. It is a phenomenon across the EU as well.

Interesting, I have never read anything about this. Wonder why no mention of this in the articles? Is it an academic tool known and understood only to their circle? How did you notice? If it’s used in social science dissertations, obviously those pushing him through the “system” were aware of what was “in the works” and played their role.

And the “natural” ones are natural because they use mathematics which is a language just with different words…right?
… His Bio mentions that one of this areas of interest is Action Research. Of course it is. Action Research Methodology improperly conducted and supervised is one of the most, if not the most, sloppy forms of research methodology one can use.
In graduate school we were required to take a certain number of “research methodology” courses. Two offered were Action Research and a survey of Qualitative Research. Both Action Research and Qualitative Research if applied properly to very specific subjects under very specific circumstances can yield some interesting insights. I have a colleague, for whom I was a reader, whose dissertation focused on using a corrective Action Research methodology based on Peirce’s Theory of Inquiry as critique for the improvement of a wide variety of types of Qualitative Educational Research.
if interested see the work of Chris Argyris and Donald Schön for Action Research. Fair warning … Action Research as it is currently improperly practiced came down to us as follows: Dewey misunderstood Peirce’s Theory of Inquiry, Dewey’s misunderstanding was then picked up by Argyris and Schön with the result being that mass confusion about Inquiry particularly in Education and Business reigns supreme.

… it is not really so much about the “tools” being used as it is the assumptions of the Ontology and the understanding of the Characteristics of Scientific Intelligence under which those tools are being used, applied and serve to guide Inquiry. See Peirce’s distinction of Idioscopy and Cenoscopy.
