I guess anything is permissible when it comes to free speech in Canada. If that’s the case, then social media and the legacy media will have to stop censoring.
I was shocked that the Canadian Supreme Court defended freedom of speech… but I wouldn’t get my hopes up. The ruling was 5-4, which tells you something.
A legal principle that used to be common sense but will need to be reaffirmed if Western civilization survives: People’s feelings can’t be protected by law. Being offensive may be in bad taste, against a private community’s rules, and to be discouraged. But first, comedy is and should be a special case. Second, people’s feelings are not a matter for the law or state to deal with.
In common-law countries, there are laws against slander and libel, as well as legal protections for parody; that’s more than enough.
Surprised the hell out of me also, seeing that most judges seem to be on the take when it comes to free speech and defying provincial “mandates”. Will be watching this closely.
