Massad Ayoob has been active in firearm instruction & protection since before I became a member of a shooting club in the mid-1970’s. I would follow his instruction in a case of self defense, anytime, as he’s rarely been proven wrong.
The case of Kitty Genovese that he mentions, while having nothing to do with a shooting, is much more horrible than any of the videos you’ll find on YT or elsewhere depicting the murder. There was a TV movie about this murder in the 1970’s called “Death Scream” that was absolutely shocking for prime time TV viewing and surprisingly realistic. Genovese was literally stabbed to death on her doorstep, while screaming for her Dad to wake up & help her. It is true that dozens witnessed what happened to her & didn’t pick up the phone to call police while the horror was in progress. I wish I could find the film but evidently, it’s only available on TCM PPV. It was very shocking that such violence was even shown in prime time on TV in the 1970’s, but was an outstanding representation of what truly happened. I have to wonder, given the circumstances, if being armed would have stopped what happened to Genovese; and I don’t contemplate that scenario often, preferring to be armed.
It is a real concern we are already such as a society if we don’t purposely decide to help one another. Above all, I think the quality of MERCY might speak loudest to those who disagree with us now and end up shell-shocked when the truth comes out & cannot be denied.
