EU has given permission to add insects in food for the general population

The EU has given permission to add insects (homegrown crickets) to bakery products, pasta and other semi-finished products "for the general population" in the new year 2023.
The permit will take effect on January 24, 2023.

Although too little is known about allergies and possible anaphylactic reactions, the Commission considers that there is no need to lay down specific labeling requirements about possible allergic reactions.

However, there is a high chance that people who are allergic to crustaceans, molluscs and house dust mites will also experience allergic reactions when consuming products with added house crickets.
It can also lead to new allergic reactions to the substrate fed to the insects.
Therefore, there is only a labeling requirement if the product contains “Acheta domesticus” powder.

This means: People must find out for themselves that “Acheta domesticus” is ground into powder and mixed with house crickets, and check on their own responsibility whether they can get an allergic reaction to it.

Responsible for the authorization:
Ursula VON DER LEYEN

The list of products in this link is endless. They’re going to add it to everything.
Fortunately I can still buy my flour from the nearest miller. Even flour from the supermarket to bake my own bread or cake will contain insects.

Bluntly put, I believe the EU is ground zero for all swabie testing shenanigans. Their previous testing grounds are resisting more and more. War + refugees + disaster everything will lead to shortages like food. Most will be thankfull for “the bugs” and think the government did them a favor!

Anybody knows if it MUST be on the label?

My cat has become more and more picky even about human food. One wonders even today what is in it!

I am hoping the fussy French will protest this contamination of food. It is duck food!

The peanut allergy thing was a bit much but now it is just those types of conditions which can help the rest of us on food labels.
Maybe a little Jimminy Cricket look a like logo to satirize the issue will get Disney upset on trade infringement and people will be informed as a consequence of the conflict.

Isn’t anyone protesting to protect the bugs? Seems there ought to be a NGO for them too.

The insect thing is concerning.
Some people also say that some processed foods might contain aborted fetal tissue in certain additives. I don’t know what to make of this at this time (don’t have a good feel, yet, for whether this information is trustworthy), and wonder if anyone knows if this is a hoax going around the internet…

I guess the Non GMO label now means if there are insects in the food they have not been genetically altered?
