The Geminids meteor shower is unique in that it is not due to the typical meteor shower associated with an icy comet, but from an asteroid (i.e., rock). Using observations from NASA’s Parker Solar Probe mission, Princeton researchers deduced that it was “…likely a violent, catastrophic event – such as a high-speed collision with another body or a gaseous explosion – that created the Geminids.” Hmmm…

Other interesting tidbits from this article is that the Parker Solar Probe mission was designed to track plasma clouds, as well as the mention of Karl Battams of the Naval Research Laboratory, who is a strong advocate for “planetary defense measures”.
