Genesis - In The Cage

Banks always did it for me, I remember as a young pup looking up the double manual sequential circuits prophet 10 and listening to ‘that’ solo.

Like the dust that settles all around me
I must find a new home
The ways and holes that used to give me shelter
Are all as one to me now
But I, I would search everywhere
Just to hear your call
And walk upon stranger roads than this one
In a world I used to know before
I miss you more!

Than the sun reflecting off my pillow
Bringing the warmth of new life
And the sounds that echoed all around me
I caught a glimpse of in the night
But now, now I’ve lost everything
I give to you my soul
The meaning of all that I believed before
Escapes me in this world of none, no thing, no one

And I would search everywhere
Just to hear your call
And walk upon stranger roads than this one
In a world I used to know before
For now I’ve lost everything
I give to you my soul
The meaning of all that I believed before
Escapes me in this world of none
I miss you more

I’m a bit of a Genesis nut. Those Steven Wilson 5.1 remixes are gorgeous.
I always loved Banks intro to Firth of Fifth, among many other things.

Love Steven Wilson, and Porcupine Tree of course. As a teen I was exposed to Frank Dunnery through It Bites and of course I joined the fan club, it was 1989, I was a long ways from home living in Cornwall and with no internet in those days it was so much harder to join the dots. The fan club literature showed the bands influences, I had no idea where the ideas came from back then but as you can imagine I soon looked into the names and well here we are 30+ years later.

The closing section of Suppers Ready, after hundreds of listens, still gets me every time. Same with The Musical Box, The Cinema Show etc. Shame about Phil’s health but there’s always the recordings. If you listen to podcasts you should look up Tabletop Genesis, fellow fanatics talking about the band, albums, tours etc.

Absolutely agree :100:. I look back sometimes as we all do when we get to a certain age on peak music moments. Cinema show was definitely up there as well as Wot Gorrila which I know is a strange choice but wind and wuthering made me cry and laugh so much it became a special track for me personally.

So much love to Phil and all the wonderful musicians for what they have given to the world of music.

Not bad for a group of public school hippies eh? :slightly_smiling_face:

Wot Gorrila is just silly fun, an aspect of the band mostly overlooked. Also the dueling drums of Phil and Chester never fails to excite. Just a great moment in time.

So if anyone is just tuning in and wants to know where to start…

Foxtrot
Selling England by the pound
The lamb
Trick of the tail
Wind and wuthering

If you get a kick out of any of those there is plenty more to explore

Yeah, Abacab has its moment’s as well, Dodo/Lurker one of my favorite live performances. Also Duke is possibly underrated. And of course Seconds Out…

Ah the beautiful Duchess, one on banks favourites x

Here’s one for you dear uintatom

The opening keyboard swells indeed sound like a fountain. Steve and Darryl both did the guitar solo justice live. I saw Steve perform in Denver years ago, well worth the effort to see him.

I don’t want to give the wrong impression but sometimes sadness can create beautiful music.

Brilliant lyrics.
Also the instrumentals on that album are tremendous.

This is an interesting one, Dodo/Lurker sandwiched between two instrumental B-sides from that album. The title of the third song is generally agreed to be the answer to the riddle in the lyrics of Lurker.

It’s your turn on the record player :slightly_smiling_face:

Ah beat me to it! Listening now

This is Abacab territory I guess, you really are a genesis nut!

Phil’s drumming on this…

I’m just going to admit I was never a big Abacab fan. There were some good tracks on some of the albums but I found myself tuning out in the later 80s

Here’s one I am guessing we both will appreciate

Oh a hundred percent.
It’s a tale of two bands really.
Mama had some moments but after that, oof.
Let me make it up to you.
