Giza Flight School -- Open Enrollment

With all of the uncertainty in air travel these days, I believe each Giza should prepare. I’ve put together a short video curriculum, but do see the full length movies for advanced training.

Please, dear ones, I implore thee, fly at thine own competency level.

Yay, thank you! Reminds me of the good ol’ days of when flying was fun! And in a few of the examples here, terrifying! Excellent choices.

Good to be prepared for sure. When it first came out my mother took me to see Those Daring Young Men in their Flying Machines, thoroughly enjoyed it.
Unfortunately pilot deaths and incapacitations continue, starting to become business as normal.
PILOT Death - IndiGo Pilot who was to operate (NAG-PNQ) flight from Nagpur to Pune, India, collapsed at the boarding gate on Aug.17, 2023 and died in hospital - 3rd pilot death this week, 5th collapse?

Well, that got my attention. Yes to subject: airplane flights and pilots.

My first flight was on a twin-engine commercial flight from Cincinnati to Chicago, 1959. It required that we put an army-type wool blanket over us as it got REALLY cold in flight. (I remember the same in 1962 when we flew to Orlando from Cincinnati to visit my ailing grandmother.)

I tried to order a helicopter out of one of the “kid-oriented” magazines when I was about 10. It turned out it wasn’t 10 feet, it was 10 inches. No way was I going to be able to get to school in my own helicopter and not on the yellow school bus: last in morning and last at night.

Giza Flight School. Hmmm. Aren’t we enrolled, already?

Geez, I’m flying mid September on South West. Needless to say I’m already getting anxiety waves. Say a little prayer for me🙏

Haha, I am en route out of the country as we speak. Today I rode on a CRJ900 to Atlanta and heard and FELT the loudest metallic creaking sounds ever several times on takeoff and landing. I inquired of the pilot afterward and he satisfactorily explained that it was a “personality trait” of this particular model.

It never crossed my mind to ask him about (shhh… about them having medical issues in flight). Sigh.

One more flight leg tomorrow and two more to come home.

These clips about an airport in Canada made me laugh…

Clip One: The news anchor is talking about how much improvement the airline has made in wait times and in cancelled flights… While she is talking about it… what the camera man does is hilarious…

Clip Two: Somebody at the airport has a creative message for Mr. Newsome!

@uintatom The image you posted with a big fella in the adjacent seat has provoked me to now share the other element of uncertainty I experienced on the aforementioned flight on that CRJ900 aircraft.

As mentioned above, the aircraft made a few loud creaking sounds when it rolled. In other words, different torsion was applied to the fuselage as the pilot banked right and returned to level flight. As we began descending for arrival, I sensed another disturbing phenomenon when the plane banked. I was resting the heel of my foot on the horizontal bracket beneath my seat with my toes flat on the carpet. When the creaking resumed on descent, I could feel my heel lifting and falling with the roll of the aircraft. Nothing significant mind you, maybe a millimeter or two. I was thinking, man, if we make it down, I gotta tell the pilot about this. It happened several more times; each instance associated with a roll. As I was congratulating my keen powers of observation, it happened again—this time with no rolling maneuver…what’s up with this I thought! It was then I discovered the real reason for the bracket flexing—the person next to me was repositioning in the seat (I forgot to ask their preferred pronoun). You see, I was sitting beside a very large person who also had a foot on the bracket. Haha, so as the plane rolled starboard and back, exertion from the greater mass of their leg applied sufficient force against the bracket, so much so I could feel it deflect. A simple example of physics was all it was. Talk about letting one’s mind race with adverse circumstances! Glad I figured out root cause of the bracket movement BEFORE talking to the captain about the creaking sounds.

Movie selection on the flight was horrible. I got tired of reading and noted the fellow up one seat to the right was engrossed in some sports movie on his iPad. Sports have never been my religion or hobby, so at first I was uninterested. Before I knew it, I had my glasses on to read the subtitles. It was a documentary about Michael Jordan and I was hooked. What a powerful and talented player he was. At some point the guy noticed me trying to over his shoulder and he turned around. I sheepishly gave him a thumbs up and he smiled and made sure the screen was visible to me the remainder of the flight.
