I’ve always believed the move away from incandescent bulbs was a stacked function. Illuminating (of course), listening, watching, modulating, irradiating… exploding? I dunno.
Maybe the IoT (internet of things) was not yet in place 20 years ago, but getting light bulbs with embedded electronics into every room in the country paved the way for that to happen. There is probably a unique MAC address on each LED bulb by now.
