Following Scarmoge’s point, the EU in and of itself is a colossal boondoggle. A “suicide pact” reminiscent of that old song “Hotel California”: you can check out, but you can never leave. The boondoggle has been so inculcated into so many people that it’s taken for granted.

As with a puncture wound, pulling out the spike/spear/dagger/sword etc removes the offending item, but without expert attention, the patient will die.
