As someone who frequently visits China and maintains close connections with locals there, I can speak to conditions in Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao, and Hong Kong. My network of contacts hasn’t observed any of the described situations in these cities. However, I recently learned that military mobilization has reached levels not seen since 2019. Our partners in Malaysia who travel regularly to China and Japan indicate the increase in the security at the newer international airports (Pudong) has quadrupled. As the Chinese new year approaches, they think China is preparing for an attack, presumably by the West.
