Wow. Thanks for all the pictures. A couple of things came to mind as I went through the offerings. Reflections on 20th Century America, and the destruction of Western Civilization.

As a native of Buffalo NY, I had the opportunity to review its present (1980’s) architecture against that of the earlier years (1910-50). The transformation was shocking. In almost every view of downtown, grand structures had been reduced to parking lots and gas stations. This for a once great city (that no one knows about). To quote Architectural Digest:

"The population of Buffalo, New York, may hover around 250,000 today, but at the turn of 20th century this city on Lake Erie was a major urban hub. Indeed, over a hundred years ago, as an industrial port for shipping and manufacturing, Buffalo was also the country’s eighth most populated city. And in 1901 this town snug on the Canadian border had more millionaires per capita than any other city in America. [Note: and according to a 1910 encyclopedia, the most trees and finest residential neighborhoods in America.]

… Enter Frank Lloyd Wright … While Wisconsin and Arizona are the locations typically associated with Wright’s work, it’s in Buffalo, of all places, that architecture enthusiasts can find a plethora of his work."

The most egregious devastation, however, is revealed in your pictures. Depression-era Americans were reduced to poverty (IMO, by the ruling oligarchs and ideologs.) Children for sale. Families of 7 living in shacks on $30 a month.

And intermixed in these images are the photos of the perpetrators and their grand lifestyles. The one of FDR shaking hands with a young LBJ in 1937 sums it up for me. All juxtaposed against an ascending pre-WWI world.

I thank you all for the nostalgic journey, but in many ways, you have documented the 100-year rot of the West. A good reminder of the challenges of the present.

The picture of the golf ball collector brought back some memories. During high school I had a part time job picking up golf balls at a driving range. A lot of the golfers seemed to regard the collectors as targets. To avoid being hit the preferred job was driving a very old Willies jeep with a ball collector in front. The only drawback of the jeep was that the doors were missing so the driver could be broadsided. For hand picking the only safety equipment provided were old football helmets and it was painful when golf balls made contact.
