Incantation bowls, also known as demon bowls

Incantation bowls, also known as demon bowls, were ancient protective tools used in what is now Iraq and Iran.

They date back to around the 6th to 8th centuries and were common in places like Upper Mesopotamia and Syria. These bowls had special inscriptions, often in a form of Aramaic called Jewish Babylonian Aramaic.

People used these bowls to capture demons and keep them away.

They would bury the bowls face down under thresholds, in courtyards, at the corners of homes where someone had recently passed away, and even in cemeteries.

Thousands have been found. One wonders what was “released”…
