It's no longer safe to communicate one's opinions in Canada

This is why I’ve been avoiding participating on this website of late and will continue to do so. At age 60 I’ve come to realize I’ll be working past the age of 65 just to ‘get by’. As a civil servant, at the provincial level, my job and future pension could easily be put in jeopardy.

The Bill would add the new intimidation offence to the list of offences in section 183 of the Criminal Code, which allows investigators to seek judicial authorization to intercept private communications. In addition, the Bill would add the new intimidation offence to the definition of “secondary designated offence” in section 487.04 of the Criminal Code, which would permit the taking of bodily samples under the existing forensic DNA analysis regime.”

"Bloc Quebecois’ amendment and the political fallout

During Tuesday’s justice and human rights committee meeting, Liberal MPs voted to approve an amendment that would remove religious exemptions from this bill.

The amendment, introduced by the Bloc Quebecois, would remove a section of the criminal code which states that “if, in good faith, the person expressed or attempted to establish by an argument an opinion on a religious subject or an opinion based on a belief in a religious text.”

The Conservative party is heavily critical of this amendment, which it says could be used to criminalize passages from the Bible, the Quran, the Torah, and other sacred texts.

Support for the bill

Jewish advocacy organizations have been among the strongest supporters of the bill, saying it responds to a surge in hate and intimidation.

We feel like we’re living in an Orwell novel – what is going on with the hate legislation is creepy.

I’m not sure to what degree petitions influence politicians, but there is one circulating at the moment that Canadians can sign:
