Kenyans have woken up to the fact that, if they want something to change, they have to make it happen themselves. The passing of legislation to increase taxes, on the things people need every day, sparked huge protests this week from all those people who were already struggling to make ends meet. This came from a “government” who promised lower taxes to come into power. Also, the “government” showed their true face when they shot unarmed protesters, which are mostly young people, desperate because they don’t see any possible future under this type of “government”.
The tax increase legislation was withdrawn under the pressure of the people, but Kenyans seems to understand that this is NOT where this ends. They did what we all need to do: formulate what we actually WANT and make it very clear that this non-negotiable. Because the fact that we need to understand and remember is: you can’t talk to these “governments”, and the problem is NOT fixed by elections of any kind. These “governments” only respond to action, a behavioral consequence (yes, it’s just like dealing with small children…).
Let us be inspired to do the same, and honor the Kenyans who lost their lives, and FORCE these “governments” and corporations to do something useful for us, instead of the other way around.
