Marcionite Church.
Fairly new to me idea, getting popularized/pushed by a couple of minor X personalities (Gnoticer and Cirnosad). Fairly complete and snazzy website [https://marcionitechurchofchrist.org/#questions]. Couple of TG channels.
Who was Marcion - bishop from Sinope (black sea coast turkey) a couple generations past Jesus’ time who 1 wrote the first bible and 2 founded a church which was very popular for several hundred years. Enemies and friends seem to agree on those points for the most part.
Most of what we know of him was 1 written a generation plus plus after his time and 2 what made it though was universally anti-Marcion. So the pro and the con (mostly the Catholic Church) have wildly varying tales from there that seem MOSTLY to hang on who is lying about the other stealing their original work and editing it for nefarious purposes.
Basically Marcion jettisoned the OT, saw Jesus as a brand new thing nothing to do with them Hebrews and their crummy history text, a good god for everyone willing to be saved. His Bible was simple a (proto?) Luke as the singular gospel, and 10 epistles of Paul. (the pro crowd has Paul being in line with Marcion, and the Catholic Church needing to re-judiazing Paul and tuck him back in response TO Marcion’s success.)
It’s fun. It requires a BIG conspiracy to explain (as the story is currently told). It does the currently popular JQ thing - I had never though of Catholicism as Jewish, but two years ago I wouldn’t have seen Free Trade or Libertarianism as having anything to do with Js as well.
Catholic Encyclopedia has a meaty write-up [CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Marcionites] but the pro camp see it as entirely straw man BS with the who stole from whom idea reversed.
Marcion has been dismissed in many places as ‘just another gnostic heretic’ but he wasn’t a gnostic at all. Also painted with all sorts of negative stuff - being anti-sex and marriage (I can find no truth in those claims). Dude made a super simple, exceedingly NON-Abrahamic take on Jesus. Way early in the space. Found massive popularity as a church community for a long time. I don’t think he so easy to write off.
But the push of this idea at this time by certain people (who runs the chruch website, who publishes the Testmentium available on Amazon) why are other flavors of YHWH isn’t Jesus father flying off the shelves - what of the pro-Marcion arguments are easily dismantled by anyone with a bit of schooling in this arena - I’m not convinced, but it’s certainly right up my alley for area of interest!
