While I agree that the political moves by Putin are very savvy, The Russian People might have a different view. Don’t know if you’ve seen the posts from YT “1402” in which Russians on the street are asked various questions. One of my best friends, originally born & raised in communist Poland, who is in Krakow at this time, says that people in The East have & continue to become very westernized in their habits, wants & desires, esp. since Eastern Europe has had so much contact with The West (personal & media). While I know Putin has an iron fist, no leader can survive their population if that population changes out of wants or needs. Putin cannot ultimately win this & that doesn’t mean The West will “win” either; there are no winners in the “average person” category. It’s all a part of a plan & the plan seems to be moving forward successfully at present.

Problem with Putin as prof Mearsheimer said, he is an 19th century man. Time will tell if Russian youth wants to stay with him in 19th century.
