News as a Serial Soap Opera?

Is it me or just my jaded sense of humor about news feeds?

Social Engineering as propatainment.

Speaking of humor and news, anyone remember “Not Necessarily the News” back in the 80’s?

Pretty funny stuff back in the pre-internet days.

Looks like the template for the news now, except no need to modify or edit…

… nope … you are not jaded in any way Bill … BINGO!

… the “daily consciousness” template is from Fahrenheit 451 - this is a pretty good summary from Google of all places. This should all look and sound very familiar.

In Fahrenheit 451, news is a tool for state control, characterized by rapid, superficial, and distracting information designed to prevent critical thought. It is delivered via wall-sized television screens (“parlor walls”) and constant, personal audio feeds (“seashell radio”) [like Spotify], ensuring citizens are constantly entertained and distracted from the country’s ongoing wars and societal decay.

Key Aspects of News in Fahrenheit 451:

  • Constant Distraction: News is packaged with intense colors, flashing images, and rapid scene changes to keep viewers hooked and unable to process information deeply.
  • Minimal Substance: The media prioritizes quick, easily digestible, and often shallow headlines over in-depth journalism, causing information to be consumed and forgotten instantly.
  • "The Family" and Interactivity: Characters view interactive TV shows known as “the family,” where their names are woven into the script, creating an addictive, pseudo-relationship that replaces real human connection.
  • Censorship and Conformity: News content is curated to eliminate controversy or uncomfortable truths, aiming to keep the population calm and compliant.
  • Ignoring Reality: The news ignores the harsh realities of the world, such as the wars occurring in the background, to avoid inducing anxiety or thought.
  • Sensory Overload: The constant barrage of news from “seashell radios” ensures citizens are never alone with their thoughts, drowning out reality.

Important News Events:

  • War: It is implied that multiple atomic wars are happening in the background, but the populace is kept largely indifferent by the media.
  • Personalized Information: News feeds can be tailored to the individual, focusing on pleasure and distraction,
  • The Chase: Montag’s escape from the government and the mechanical hound is broadcast live on TV as entertainment. (coming soon to a dedicated channel near you)

Thanks for the validation and reminder why books were burned in the movie. Concentration exercises by reading is dangerous to the narrative industry.
