Nicotinic acid ingested via the alveolar strucutres in the lung makes the vitamin B3 (group niacin, nicotinic acid, or NA) available to the lung and heart itself very quickly.
Smoking high-qualtiy nicotine is an actually a very useful therapeutic. Vitamin B3 is the precursor to NAD+, among other highly necessary co-enzymes, critical for immune response. I would estimate that B3 is second among anti-oxidants of importance, save Vitamin C.
