If you study hurricane history, it’s not uncommon to see massive inland damage inflicted even if the core storm falls apart.
Research “The Long Island Express” of 1934. The brunt of the damage was done on Long Island, but the second landfall in Connecticut triggered massive secondary flooding and 10’ storm surges.
