One Of The Best Quick Drum Rolls In Rock (Or Anywhere) You Will Ever See

Look at the simplicity of the kit set-up. When someone can produce the roll from a kit like this, it makes them great!

Anyone who knows anything about John Bonham knew he hated touring with an intensity that depressed him like nothing else. He wanted to stay home on his farm with his wife and children and who would blame him.

When I was a kid working the concerts at Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston, I would bring towels and other items back stage (with HPD escort). When I put some wet, cold towels next to Bonham, he turned and looked at me with this surprised reaction, as it was obvious I was very young. Brief conversation was about if I was a native Texan, rode horses, etc. He later had Peter Grant (Mgr) leave me a $100 tip! In 1971, that was a lot of money for a kid. I was also allowed into the pit where the photos were taken. No matter whatā€™s said about him and his really bad habits, yeah, they were bad, he was kind to me and when I watched him on-stage, his brilliance was immediately recognizable. Regardless of the genre, the majority of people intuitively recognize true brilliance, a gift if you will, when they see it.

Notice in this very early video, start min. 10:00 to get your bearings and at min. 10:10-10:15, well, my jaw still drops to this day.

Heā€™s my husbandā€™s favorite drummer. Nice story too.

I got to see most all the ā€˜greatsā€™. The only ones I didnā€™t get to see that I really wanted were The Beatles, Doors and Jimi.

I just showed my husband the vid and he said you sure know what youā€™re talking about, right on! :joy:

It was a time of just great fun but, Iā€™ve lost a lot of my hearing and have permanent tinnitus. Ugh! You play, you pay.

What??? LOL I too canā€™t hear very well. I went to a concert every weekend and had to make our way to the front stage. My first concert was Deep Purple - Machine Head and boy were those amps stacked to the ceiling. I think they were in world book of records for most decibels at that time. I walked out of there with my ears ringing for an hour. Yeah, lots of fun but paying for it now.

If I knew then what I know nowā€¦
Hate to be the bearer of bad news but your hearing will not recover. Get used to the ringing.

If only we knewā€¦.my ears donā€™t ring anymore, only that night. From all the loud music in my play days my hearing has become very bad. I canā€™t listen to loud music anymore. A couple months ago we decided to set up our original Bose 901 speakers and I canā€™t really listen to them loud. I hate loud music anymore but they do sound good LOL.

Same here (hear) @Sal2lee ! I canā€™t stand loud music. Not in bars, clubs, etc. I just canā€™t do it. Itā€™s all ā€˜buzzā€™; not clear like it used to be. Donā€™t know if that makes sense but only way I know how to explain it.

By the way, the ringing is always worse at night. A number of theories as to why this is but theories abound.

ā€¦ shall we?, of course we shall  We have quite the blended family ā€¦
my smarter, better half has a pair of Bose 901s and a pair of Infinity RS II-As, driven by an Onkyo A-10 and a Carver M400 respectively.
ā€¦ my preferences are a pair of ESS AMT 1Bs and a pair of Avid 103s both driven by a Kenwood 9400. Different ears for different folks.
ā€¦ needless to say I have waaaayyyy to much ā€œspareā€ equipment. In my defense it wasnā€™t that long ago one could acquire incredible components of all makes and models for a song.

ā€¦ fun fact ā€¦ In August of 1981 I saw the Ramones with Holly and the Italians at the Agora Ballroom in Dallas. Until this show I never knew that if you were close enough to the amp stacks that you could feel your internal organs ā€œmoving aroundā€.

ā€œIf itā€™s too loud youā€™re too oldā€

ā€¦ knock on wood ā€¦ Iā€™m still getting away with it headphones and all. One day it will catch up with me. ā€¦ but for now I will listen while I can. One of the few addictions still socially acceptable.

Or the fillings in your teeth vibrate to the point of falling out. (Working a Humble Pie concert.)

Guilty! Iā€™m much older and only marginally less stupid. Please remember that the band who is credited with making that phrase famous (KISS/Gene Simmons), ALL wear earplugs. Hint, hint, winky, winky. The hearing damage shows up later. If thereā€™s one thing Iā€™ve learned in life (& probably just one), itā€™s that karma is a bzitch and Iā€™ve never really gotten away with anything. Everything comes back to bite you in the butt, sometimes years later.

@Scarmoge love the story with your internal organs moving around. Sounds like my experience at the Deep Purple concert.

We are hodgepodge too (old school). We had a Denon that overheated and ended up getting an Onkyo 960 (itā€™s new) upstairs with middle of the road book case klipschs speakers paired with small Energy Classic Fives (surround sound). We used to have the Bose Accoustimass but blew a couple speakers and ended up giving the base to a friend. My Husband didnā€™t like Bose because of the submissive base. I came across original Bose 901s (tulip) stands so we had to get the Bose 901s out. Helped my husband run wire and place the speakers respectively. We still use a Sherwood with our Bose. My husband also saved my old Marantz set-up I had before I met him. We never did get those going again.

Upstairs are for movies and downstairs are for boom boom time. Whatā€™s funny is we hardly ever watch movies (hollyweird) and listen to loud music LOL.

Good Timesā€¦

It definitely was a ā€˜timeā€™ of great fun!!! Being in big crowds sharing the vibrations was extremely fun
I remember I was in 4th grade and I cut my bangs. My sister said I looked like the Beatles and I didnā€™t even know what she was talking about.
Only 6/7 years later I was at a Jimi Hendrix concert, I think ā€˜Star Spangled Bannerā€™ was the loudest of all.
My girlfriend had 2 older brothers who worked security for the Denver Colosseum. They let us know that Alice Cooper would be at the neighborhood park to play baseball, he did talk with us but it wasnā€™t really memorable.
And yes I also have tinnitus. Now that I listen to music with earphones Iā€™ve discovered I donā€™t like a lot of songs that I thought were so great. Thereā€™s talent and then thereā€™s genuine exceptional talent.
