… or it could be the toll of having one’s “authenticity” becoming widely well known.
Constantly having that particular “authentic self” confronted, questioned, and continually reflected back to you 24/7 can’t be good for his mental health.

Yes, the political ads I’ve seen certainly continue to bring up his previous positions. Trying “to pass” as a moderate democrat takes a mental toll when one is actually woke as heck.
