His Holiness Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI lives in retirement in Vatican City - during WW2 he served in the German military, first as a Hitler Youth, then as a Luftwaffe Flakhelper, and latterly as a conscript soldier. These wartime experiences, and his deep opposition to Nazism inherited from his father, helped shape the man later elected Pope.
