Apologies to those who have already seen this and who may be subbed to Dr Steve Turley’s channel. This was an in interesting video on possibly why the new pontiff chose Leo XIV. The connection between the dawn of a new industrial age with his predecessor namesake and the dawn of a new one with the current reign.
Thank you for this! I heard a local priest give a homily during Mass last week in which he educated the parishioners about Pope Leo XIII and his Rerum Novarum (most parishioners have forgotten if they ever knew), and that Leo XIV was (in his reading) going to develop on this a social gospel for our time, not politically left yet deeply concerned about human dignity.
My only quibble with Dr Turley (who if I remember correctly is evangelical Christian?) is that he did not mention the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which most of Silicon Valley adores, including our current superstars in politics, Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, and the “PayPal Mafia,” which includes the Internet of Bodies. He kind of skips over it and jumps straight to AI and geopolitics.
I don’t know which is worse, AI or the IoB. (I do like some well-done AI art…) He does mention transhumanism. The Fourth Industrial also wants financialization of all of nature, at the least, and genetic modification of all kinds of life. Our tech overlords fancy themselves - and IMO are treated in both “conservative” and liberal media as such - lords over all Creation. They’re certainly glorified at the very least. Pope Leo XIV will have to deal with that at some point.
