Cosmic weapons are already here?

I keep running back into the story of Babel being the important one.
Sphinx message “you’re just an animal with some intelligence.”
We, the civilizations on earth peoples, have, at least once, bounced hard against a limit on our skills/know how/hubris.
if Rhodes ‘civilize the world the british way’ plan was well intention-ed if flawed. could our elites/betters/breakaway contingent have a similarly motivated ‘don’t let the herd onto this stuff or we’ll trigger the damn babel response again’ effort.
We are a very, very primitive civilization still. My gut feeling is that we have stranded guests among us that would die instantly if they earth grid were switched on
