Surprised? … not really …
Many would read, but they are unable to comprehend. Historically what made the difference with slaves breaking free of bondage was that someone taught them to read. Since they couldn’t read, many didn’t know they were bondage. Illiteracy or deficiency in comprehension explains what is happening today. If one can’t read, they are in bondage to corporate media manipulation.
A local library no longer charges late fees, in the hope more will check-out a book in the first place and then would finish reading it, if not penalized when the book is over due.
If there were a very high percentage of readers;
the government would have to revisit their education policies
Government educational policies are why so many young people today can’t read/comprehend. It is a sad state of affairs. A newspaper is written on an 8th grade level.
Back in the day an eighth grade level education was considered adequate for getting through life, many stopped at that point. Going on to higher levels with a high school graduation was not in everyone’s reach or goal. I was the only one in my family both paternal and maternal side, except my mother’s mother, who graduated from high school. I racked up college credits from several colleges over time, however never enough for a BS or BA degree. Finally I enrolled in college for the last time to attend the required one semester and cashed in enough credits to get a two year associates degree in 1998, 26 years after graduating from high school. It looked good on my resume so when I moved to Houston it helped secure a position with Shell Oil.
On the other side of the literacy issue; if a contract is presented to you on more than one side of paper, you probably shouldn’t sign it.
Especially if the other side is left blank.
Or you learn to sign it with the appropriate language or proper reference to UCC1.
Scarmoge gave me homework a few weeks ago. I was able to gathered a few of the book recommendations. Soon I will start the Conservative journey, those books are on the high priority reading list. I was sidetracked by war, my mind became bellicose, started reading military history.
… no homework. But glad to hear you are leaning toward autodidacticism.
Just a rec. or two that maybe offer a slightly different look at the history of conservatism and its meaning.
When signing any contract it is wise to always make a copy, and a photo of both sides of the paper is worth more than a thousand words.
