She's Got it...In Spaids

I only discovered her a few weeks ago and have been listening since.

She has it. Whatever you want to call “it” It’s an innate ability. She came with it. And there are video’s of her at age 12 playing saxophone where she was doing “it”

See, were told that jazz musicians looked like this…

Not any more.

We were told that it is an American music grown out of the black experience. Not really. In part, maybe.

Now the top practioners of this art form look like this

You thought they all had scratchy voices with a cigarette hanging from their mouth?

We were told the blues was born from the black experience and that a white man didn’t have that archetype or experience to play the music authentically?

Oh, yes we were. It’s in the literature.

Are you sure??? Have you heard little young Junxi Yu play JohnLee Hooker better than Hooker?

Nobody Loves Me but My Mama and She be Jiving too might be a universal experience?

I ain’t got a dime in my pocket but I got a pie in the oven?

Sure, blues and jazz i might have been born in New Orleans and travelled up the Mississippi River but I’m telling ya it’s been globalized. And you can’t tell who has it and who doesn’t by their face.

They are going to have to rewrite all the literature if people who never picked cotton can somehow replicate the music as well as it’s inventors.

She has three things that are rare.

Melodic Invention, Harmonic sophistication, and feeling/rhythmic invention and placement. Without a trumpet sound that sounds like she spent her entire life doing Arban and Herbert Clarke exercises, spent 4 years and Julliard and really is a classical musician faking being a jazz musician. It doesn’t work. Her sound is gritty and some coach is going to come along and give her a new fangled trumpet and some tone exercises and ruin it for us.
