Some fun rags by willliam bolcom

I was really happy to find a recording of these rags by composer William Bolcom on YouTube, because my organ teacher played the first one for me way back in high school when I was taking lessons… it’s a lot of fun (as are the other two, “Poltergeist” being some great whimsy. But the first rag is sheer elegance and some WONDERFUL modulations by Bolcom. Enjoy!

Listened to these while making breakfast. My personal favorite (being at least as uncultured as the French) was the third one (Think it was Dream shadows?). Winner to my ear.
The first one sounded (to me) like something that would be played in an upscale saloon of the Old West (remember, uncultured…) did like the key changes and soft notes, etc…
And the Poltergeist just seemed a bit too happy. I prefer more of an ominous tone with my poltergeists. Just me and my lack of culture I’m sure.

Thanks for posting. Typically I tend to listen to heavy metal with breakfast…but this was a welcome change. Feel much better.

… Here you go! Nothing here but Red Rags. Cheers! Please especially notice the “key changes and soft notes”.

I know that one by heart Dr. Scamoge.

It’s the only way that one can travel down that road…

One of the few female performer/artists is Dorothy Donegan who studied classical but due to lack of place for women in classical at that time, she subsequently made her name in off beat jazz/slide piano and had a long career. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJ7OLTl-HRE
