Farmers seeking to be certified and grow organic produce must leave the designated field fallow for three years, meaning no income for those three years, which supposedly causes previous chemical insecticides to miraculously “dissipate”. Going three years without income plus lack of knowledge of growing produce for organic certification are the “barriers”.
The proposed Organic Act sets up a network to funnel funds via NGOs and a new bureaucracy for farmers.
Current organic farmers were requesting assistance years ago and received none, so they used their wits and networks to have what exists today. The new kids on the block need the government’s help…
