It’s The Erev Rav, a group of non-Jews who followed the Israelites out of Egypt. Now known to us as Khazarians. There’s others involved (Amalek), but they’re one of the primaries, & children of Esau. I don’t agree with it all, but here’s the series:

Interestingly, in The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem on (mostly detestable) Netflix, there is repeated historical reference to the Sephardic/Ashkenazi rift. The Ashkenaze are of course presented as victims.
I do not have cable so am not up-to-date on Netflix, other than a friend who told me the price has risen greatly!! I did find it interesting to learn that those we think of as Jews here in the West were actually converts to Judaism from the country of Kazariah, which history seems to have been buried. Does that mean there is no actual bloodline back to Abraham? 
The other question would be “who”, exactly, was the “God” of Israel?! For a fresh take on all that I would suggest checking out the work of Anglican Priest, Paul A. Willis…website, The 5th Kind.

the Erev Rav are NOT Khazarians. there are some thousands of years of discrepancy here. happy to help.
this Willis man is good and precise, just as his Italian collague. delightful they are in contemporary theology.
