The Tragic History of the Castrati: The Italian Boys Who Were Castrated to Preserve Their High Singing Voices

In the 16th century, the Vatican implemented a ban prohibiting women from singing in church choirs. However, the desire for high singing voices remained, leading choirs throughout Italy to adopt an alternative solution: employing castrati. These were young boys who had undergone castration before reaching puberty. By removing their testicles, the procedure prevented their voices from deepening during adolescence, allowing them to retain their high-pitched singing voices into adulthood.

While the castrati possessed unique vocal abilities highly prized in the music world, their lives were marked by significant hardships. Castration resulted in a lack of testosterone production, which led to various adverse effects on their bodies. The castrati often experienced abnormal bone growth, osteoporosis, and a propensity for depression.

Some fortunate castrati managed to achieve fame and fortune thanks to their exceptional voices, securing prestigious positions in renowned choirs and opera houses. However, the majority of castrati lived in poverty and obscurity throughout their lives. Many faced immense challenges and struggles, both due to the physical consequences of the castration procedure and the social stigma associated with their condition. This often led to a tragic existence until their eventual death.

Not to mention the increased chance that presumably quite effeminate young men would attract the attention of the Catholic priests, whom have been forced into “celibate” existence.

I see the depression low testosterone causes daily. My job is running a needle exchange, and by far the top drug of choice of my clients is intra-muscular testosterone (tied with methamphetamine, its use as well usually tied to depression, and the knowledge their lives will get no better in our present society). All ages and walks of life, I often see men in their 20’s who have the blood testosterone levels of 70-80 year olds, are extremely depressed, often losing their employment due to low motivation, and in the middle of relationship breakdowns, as their libidos are non-existent. Their doctors won’t prescribe as they are a few units above an arbitrarily low figure, and it’s extremely policed by the government health authorities. But they will hand out anti-depressants hand over fist.

So, off to the gym to find black-market diverted pharmaceutical testosterone, usually courtesy of the local bikies, or underground labs online.

Fast forward a couple of months and they are completely different, a complete 180. It’s hard to judge them for their choices. Sorry for the tangent, but I can imagine how pitiful the castrati’s lot was.
