El Paso, Baby. What more do you need to know. I have Mexican friends that wouldn’t venture into El Paso!.. most of it, anyway. Guaranteed this one was “on the road”.
When I lived in Filthidelphia, I had my dad’s station wagon to move into my brownstone walkup to go graduate school at Penn. I parked maybe 60’ from the front steps and I could no more take in a box or two to put on the porch to turn around and go back to the car, someone had already stolen my BLACK AND WHITE TV out of the back seat with the pillow that was covering it. Once I got everything inside, I called the police.
The incredibly nice Black cop that showed up literally drove his cruiser onto the sidewalk. “If I don’t do that, they will steal the radios and everything out of my police car”. Turns out, the building next door was condemned so only homeless drug users and their pathetic families lived there. I was one block from where CAF grew up. The neighborhood had obviously changed since she lived there.
It was a great learning lesson. You can pretend to be open minded and liberal until they steal the B&W TV out of your dad’s station wagon and you simply learn to not venture back into dangerland.
By the way, I left there with a coat hanger as an antenna on dad’s car.
