Soullessness has a very long human history.
Cromwell being a Puritan and all seemed to not have one either. Our historical ”leaders” are fraught with good intentions that in the end turn out evil. Why is that?
Change a few words and you couldn’t tell the difference between Cromwell’s address and one by Cicero in Roman times, or the “den of vipers” quote attributed to Andrew Jackson in 19th-century America…
Why? And why was the self-righteous Cromwell himself a tyrant? The fact that history repeats itself, or “rhymes” as some say, is one of the proofs that either human nature doesn’t change or, if it does, changes very, very slowly. Power corrupts; the already corrupt are drawn to power; and being corrupt, sociopathic, or psychopathic is a major advantage in struggles for power in human society.
Then there’s what you might call the “ideologue syndrome.” Nothing is more dangerous, merciless, and destructive than someone in power who believes he knows the Absolute Truth, couldn’t possibly be wrong, and is working for the greater good… That’s one of the problems with Marxism and dozens of other ism’s that have afflicted the world.
Speaking of Cromwell, he was executed by Henry the 8th. He even later lamented it. Curiously enough, while I do think Qanon is propagandist by either Russia or CIA. There does exist the possibility Donald Trump could perform a coupe the same way Mary Tudor did on Lady Jane Grey. Nothing new under the sun…
