I never tire of this piece. Another nice performance of the solo version (the original was organ and orchestra) of the Guilmant transcription (and no, it was not composed by an AI…lol):
In the short term, we will see a lot of the formulaic music created and performed by AI. The sort of “music” my housemate calls “I know three words, I deserve an award, cause I know these three words.” She repeats this in a deadpan Aspie voice with a German accent, and it is hilarious but also spooky and true. This garbage plays nearly 24/7 on most “pop” stations, even in Ireland. It makes real artists sound like morons and uses auto-tune to make non-artists sound like musicians (but they look good, partially undressed and gyrating - male or female). As a musician, my main hope is there will be a backlash similar to what happened in arts and crafts when mass production went viral in the late 19th century, and the “Arts and Craft” movement was born that ended up affecting not just artists and craftspeople but also writers and eventually even mass production itself. Musicians, the real ones, may have to go back to either finding a patron or performing with friends and neighbors for the enjoyment of doing so and sometimes recording in their bedrooms and sharing on platforms that allow for it on the internet (but risk having good stuff stolen by an AI). Many of us do that in our personal lives anyway. The “industry” will continue to produce “stars” for some time, but eventually, people will likely get tired of hollow and uninteresting music. I’m not too fond of rap, but the good stuff is real poetry, often composed on the spot. AI can only imitate that, and it is only as good as the human that programmed it in the first place.
