My assessment is Russia is determined to protect the Crimean Peninsula and Black Sea because it is Russia’s only access to a warm water port. Turkey guards the Bosphorus Strait. A narrow strait with a maximum length of 31 kilometers and a maximum width of 3.7 kilometers leading into the Mediterranean Sea. Then consider there is the Iranian oil pipeline going into Southern Europe.

So, an offensive against a strong European military force to destroy, or at least greatly weakening it would be in Russia’s overall interest.
