The only emergency alert the UK needs is when McDonalds has a discount.

Not for EMS this is automatic phone alert to people, seen this used in the u.s. for hazardous weather and riots.
My phone went in the microwave, not heard a peep here in the UK

Yes it went off on my phone, had loads of conspiracy theorists say that you needed to turn your phone off, take out the Sim car and wrap it in silver foil. Really stupid ideas. If they want to find you they will.
This reminds me of the “emergency channel” system that’s been in movies like V for Vendetta and wonder woman 1984, for use by the government to hijack and broadcast to any and every device connected to the internet, can be used for safety alerts but also other nefarious purposes.
I put cell and wi-fi devises in a microwave oven when I’m not using them, not sure how strong the shielding in those are.
Shielding, in microwave ovens, is, usually, for micro-wave specific frequencies. That is , they are supposed to shield for microwaves( large group), and some do work better than others. They would not be able to shield against nanowaves, milliwaves or petawaves; Etc.
They would perhaps not be able to block longitudinal waveforms anyway( scalar interference patterns).
This is also a reason why “Faraday Bags” have limited use.
